Celebrating the Birthday of Frederick Chopin and Commemorating Revolutionary War Heroes on America’s 250th Anniversary

This multi-faceted program highlights the legacies of Revolutionary War heroes Thaddeus Kosciuszko, his aide-de-camp Agrippa Hull, and Casimir Pulaski. Hosted at the Montante Cultural Center of Canisius University, the event features a rich blend of music, living history, and literature. The afternoon includes performances of Chopin’s masterpieces, rarely heard compositions by Kosciuszko, and patriotic music performed by the Canisius University Chorale and the Chopin Singing Society under the direction of Dr. Brad Wingert. Featured soloists include Mary Beth Wrobel and pianists Karen Schmid, Melanie Bebak, and Michael Cygan.
The program further explores history through a live portrayal of Agrippa Hull by actor Charles Everhart, the letters of Chopin, and the poetry of Phyllis Wheatley, the first African American author to publish a book of poetry. Guests can also view a curated display of memorabilia related to the celebration. This community event concludes with a reception and is free and open to the public, with ample parking available in nearby lots and on the streets. This program is sponsored by the Permanent Chair of Polish Culture at Canisius University, the Polish Arts Club of Buffalo, and the Chopin Singing Society, with support from a grant from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Arts and Culture Initiative.
